Dr Philip Beattie is married with two young children. He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and the medical school of Queen's University, Belfast. Philip came to New Zealand in 1989 to further his medical training and compete in the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games, representing Northern Ireland in athletics. He worked at National Women's Hospital, training in obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatology, before returning to the United Kingdom in 1991.
In 1992, Philip returned to New Zealand to marry paediatrician Wendy Walker. He now combines private practice with part time work as a specialist at National Women's Hospital. His main areas of interest include high-risk obstetric medicine, pre-malignant disease of the cervix and uterus, colposcopy, hysteroscopy and laparoscopic surgery.
