Dr John Masters

Dr John Masters FRACS is one of New Zealand’s leading cosmetic plastic surgeons, and has been based in Wellington since 2003.
Dr Masters’ surgical expertise was learned from the world’s best. After completing his 11 years of training as a specialist surgeon, he sought out and worked alongside some of the top plastic surgeons in the world, learning all he could as he went.
In the United States, Dr Masters was appointed to a hand surgery fellowship at the prestigious Mt Sinai Hospital and New York University. The results of his work there, particularly in the area of tetraplegia and nerve entrapment, were presented to medical conferences around the world.
While in New York, he learned from Dr Sherrell Aston, considered to be New York’s leading facelift surgeon. As chair of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, Dr Aston is the Plastic Surgeon to New York’s elite and is a regular guest on Oprah.
In Atlanta, Georgia, Dr Masters was the last international fellow to study under the late Professor John Bostwick III and his team at Emory University. With Professor Bostwick, Dr Masters worked on all aspects of plastic surgery with a focus on breast surgery. Dr Masters also took the opportunity to learn from leading breast and nasal surgeon Dr John Tebbetts of Dallas, Texas.
In the United Kingdom, Dr Masters was a consultant surgeon at the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, where he was able to visit and learn from other leading surgeons includind Barcelona’s Dr Alberto Lluch.
Returning to New Zealand, Dr Masters and his wife, Leanne, a specialist surgical nurse and the practice’s Lead Surgical Assistant, set up Plastic Surgical Masters in Wellington, making their wealth of knowledge and expertise acquired overseas available in the capital. The design and décor of their rooms, created in a completely refurbished warehouse space, reflects the warm professional approachability and individualised, patient-focussed care of the practice.
The Masters’ expertise has been recognised in the media and they have appeared on television’s 60 Minutes programme, Campbell Live, Good Morning and Flipside, as well as in national newspaper and magazines and been interviewed on a range radio stations.
Dr Masters is a member of the New Zealand Foundation for Cosmetic Plastic Surgery, the New Zealand Association of Plastic Surgeons, the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and is an International Candidate of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He has co-authored and presented research papers at international conferences in Italy and the United Kingdom
