Medical Training

After leaving St Andrews College as Dux, Ian studied medicine at the Otago Medical School gaining his degree in 1980. Three years were spent in general practice before going on to do his ophthalmology training in Wellington and Christchurch . During this time he received the Pharmicia and Davis & Geck prizes for papers presented. He then went on to complete a glaucoma fellowship and The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne , with further experience in Australia before returning to Christchurch .

Subspecialty Interests

Refractive surgery, anterior segment and cataract surgery, glaucoma, strabismus, general and acute ophthalmology.

Current Practice

Full time private ophthalmic practice in Christchurch since 1993. Helped establish Laservision in 1997 becoming the leading Lasik surgeon in 1999 and clinical director.
