Dr Anil Sharma

MB ChB DGM FRCOG CCST (UK) FRANZCOG

Dr Anil Sharma, has a firm commitment to the provision of women's healthcare with empathy, good humour and patient involvement. Anil understands that this branch of medicine causes significant anxiety for many patients. The consultation and examination are undertaken in a sensitive manner with the provision of a nurse chaperone (as per good practice guidelines in most developed countries).

These days a number of bewildering options exist for many gynaecological treatments. Anil believes in the jargon-free explanation of these to enable knowledge to conquer fear and to tailor the right option for each individual patient. The consultations are undertaken in a number of clinics across Auckland which helps to enable prompt assessment and treatment. Anil believes that the initial consultation is the vital first step in an ongoing dialogue that includes expert surgical therapy and comprehensive post-operative support. Commitment to quality of care and safety rank very highly throughout this process.

Since moving to Auckland he has a part-time position as Gynaecologist and Urogynaecologist to Waitemata DHB and has been in private practice since 2004.

Training

Dr Anil Sharma graduated from Leicester University Medical School in 1987 with degrees in Surgery and Medicine. He undertook a detailed training programme over the next 12 years and qualified as a specialist Gynaecologist and Obstetrician in 1999, having trained in many teaching centres in the UK and NZ. Anil is the author of a number of publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and textbooks, and continues with his interest in medical education with postgraduate lectures to family doctors and nurses about his specialty. He has been awarded membership of both the UK and ANZ Royal Colleges of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists after passing both sets of higher exams and undertakes the Continuing Medical Education Programme of the latter.
In recognition of service to the science and art of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, he was recently awarded Fellowship of the UK Royal College. He also writes articles about women's health for Ohbaby! magazine.
He no longer undertakes night time work as an obstetrician, partly to ensure that he is well-rested prior to surgery.
