Dr Robert Fris
MBChB, FRCS, FACS
General Surgeon with special training in Laparoscopic Surgery
Rob completed his medical school at Otago, and completed his surgical training in Canada and Scotland. He returned to Canada because of job opportunities, and established a very busy practise in Vancouver Canada. (the skiing opportunities had nothing to do with this choice!) After 10yrs of a busy general surgery practise with heavy involvement in breast cancer, trauma, teaching, and endocrine surgery, Rob saw the potential of laparoscopic surgery, and became involved in its introduction to his hospital. However, the call to return to NZ became increasingly strong, so he and his wife Jan decided to return to NZ in 1991 with their three children. He rapidly built up a reputation as a thoughtful surgeon who realised that surgery was not always the only treatment option, and his laparoscopic skills in particular were soon recognised.
Rob is keen on all sports, particularly his children’s, and is active in tramping, scuba diving, boats and fishing. He is presently learning to fly (helicopters).
