Dr David Zimmerman

BDS, FAACP

Dr David Zimmerman, graduated as a dentist from Otago in 1971. Working in Central Auckland he developed a strong interest in Orthodontics. It was

his interest in the interaction between the teeth, the jaws and the rest of the face, neck and the problems that are caused by not understanding these relationships that lead him to study these areas. TMD is far more invasive than just a clicky jaw. Two major drivers of pain are incompatibility between the bite (teeth) and the jaw joint. The second is a poor airway that makes breathing difficult. The struggle to overcome these difficulties leads to most of the pains in the Face Jaws Head neck and shoulders.

Headaches are the other major problem caused by these issues. This includes all forms of headaches such as Tension, Clenching and Migraines. Postural adaptation is the underlying cause of RSI, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Raynaud’s disease. This is a poorly understood and equally poorly treated discipline.

This interest has taken him all over the world for study and in particular to study Orthodontics, Head and Neck Pain and Sleep Disordered Breathing.

Latterly Dr Zimmerman completed a Fellowship with the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, being the first to achieve this outside North America.

His practise is limited to TMJ Dysfunction and to Sleep Disrupted Breathing.

He lectures in the dental aspects of Head-pain to health professionals and Medical implications of Mouth and Jaw Pain to Dentists.

The practise philosophy is to “Be Inclusive”. These are medical problems with a Dental Solution. Dr Zimmerman is happy to discuss cases, including your case, with you if you ever need to.
